We are excited for our upcoming trip to Japan this month. We will spend a total of 10 days.

We arrive at Osaka Day 1 (late afternoon) and leave via Nagoya airport Day 10 (after lunch).

We are staying 3 nights, Maybe 1 night in Kyoto and 4 nights in Tokyo (with day trip at Mount Fuji) and 1 night in Nagoya before we leave on Day 10.

Do you think buying a JR pass is practical or it will be more expensive?

Help please.

Thanks.

Hi there,

The difference is quite small but looking at the route you will travel, I think buying normal tickets would be more economical here than purchasing a 7 day JR Pass.

The JR Pass would have been useful if you returned to Osaka (instead of flying out of Nagoya).

Hope this helps,
Daniel

Hi Daniel,

Follow up question what if we extend our trip (13 days instead of 10 days)..

Schedule as follows:
We arrive at Osaka Day 1 (late afternoon) and leave via Nagoya airport Day 13 (after lunch).

We are staying 3 nights in Osaka,
Maybe 4 nights in Tokyo (with day trip at Mount Fuji)
3 nights in Hokkaido then
1 night in Nagoya before we leave on Day 13

Do you think buying a JR pass is practical or it will be more expensive?

Hi again!

More days in Japan is always good!

A JR Pass would be a BIG help if you plant to travel to Hokkaido by rail. However look at travel times before you decide, as it is a 7 hour trip from Tokyo - Sapporo, meaning you'll spend a lot of time on the train. At the same time, a 7 day JR Pass is around the same price as a one way Nagoya - Sapporo, so your savings would be ery good.

If you are serious about visiting Hokkaido, consider adding 1-2 nights more there. This way you would have a more relaxed time traveling.

Hope this helps,
Daniel
