Not sure if a 7 day JR pass is best.

Hello, I'm not sure which pass to get. I'm confused about the JR Central pass, perhaps would be better for us.
We are a family of 4 adults, travelling in 4 - 18 December 2017

Day 1 arrive Narita Airport (express to Shinjuku)
Day 2-5 Tokyo (we can use suica card)
Day 6-8 Shinjuku to Lake Kawaguchiko (we are not going to Hakone, but staying around the lakes.)
Day 9 - 13 Mt. Fuji to Kyoto
Day 13-17 Kyoto to Osaka
Perhaps we will travel to Nara return during that time.
Day 18 we fly from Osaka.

So my thoughts are perhaps
1. Pay as normal fare for NEX.
2. Use Suica card for Tokyo travel as not very expensive.
3. Perhaps use JR pass starting on the day we leave Tokyo for lake Kawaguchiko. (but I am confused about which stations and lines accept JR Pass.)
4. Use the JR Pass for Mt. Fuji, Kyoto, and Osaka/nara, which is 7 days.
Is this economical compared to the individual fares?
We would very much like to ride the bullet train at least once.

OR
is there a better way to do it? For example, I have seen Central JR passes? perhaps this would be a better purchase?

I hope you can help, I'm very confused!!
Thankyou,
Jenny

Hi Jenny,

I think the best option would simply be to buy normal tickets for your trip. A JR Pass works best when you make a return Tokyo Kyoto/Osaka. You basically travel one way with a side visit to the Fuji area and would not be able to make economic use of a JR Pass.

Also travel within Kansai is low cost and there too it would simply be more economic to buy normal tickets or use an IC card like Suica.

Hope this helps,
Daniel

Hi,
As said, you don't travel enough to make a rail pass pay off...however, if you are willing to expand your plans a bit, such as take a day trip to Hiroshima and see Miyajima, you could make a 7 day pass pay off. Honestly, you have about 4 days set for Osaka which if you're also seeing Tokyo is serious overkill (but you absolutely should not skip Nara either). Taking some time to see Himeji or Koyasan would be well worth it too.

For the Fuji 5 Lakes area, there are also a few regional passes that might help - see here or consider the Fuji Hakone Pass.

Good luck.
