Need Shinkansen on Day 1 and 8

I will be traveling to Japan for two weeks. But the bulk of the first week will be in Tokyo, using the metro and possibly some train. We plan to leave on Friday for Osaka (Shinkansen), Kyoto, Hiroshima, Miyajima, and heading back to Tokyo on the following Saturday, which will be Day 8 on a 7 day rail pass. Does it make sense to purchase a 14 day pass with the possibility of using a little of it in Tokyo proper or purchase a one way ticket back from Hiroshima to Tokyo for our "outside of 7 day" day?

Hi there,

This is a bit of a difficult one. The 7 day JR Pass would have been perfect here, at the same time normal tickets for this itinerary cost a little less that a 14 day JR Pass.

You could purchase a one way ticket Tokyo - Osaka and then use a 7 day JR Pass for Osaka - Hiroshima and Hiroshima - Tokyo at this is by far the most expansive part.

The 14 day JR Pass could also be an option, however in this case you'd have to add a little more travel to your itinerary to really make the most of the pass. For instance a day trip from Tokyo to Nikko a stopover in Takayama before going to Osaka would both be great options.

Hope this helps,
Daniel

Thanks, Daniel, for the suggestions. I'd like to explore the day trip option while we're in Tokyo. Where would you suggest? I know Hakone would be nice; however, I don't think a JR train goes from Tokyo to Hakone, plus, you would want to stay in Hakone. But since we will be staying at the Hilton (where the 5th night is the same amount of points as four nights), we would want to come back to Tokyo each day. Any suggestions?

Hi Again!

Hakone can be reached with the Shinkansen from Tokyo - Odawara staition, this is in fact the quickest way for getting to Hakone and covered by the JR Pass, travel within Hakone however will require normal tickets.

Other great day trips I'd suggest making would be Kamakura (to see the big Buddha) Nikko and Yokohama.
