Hello, I have a new itinerary and was wondering what the best option may be for this trip. It is over the span of 9 days. I read that some of the legs may not be used with the JR Rail Pass? Not sure if that's true so I thought I might double check here. Thank you for any help on the itinerary check.

Also, is there a high time for train travel? Was wondering if I could just turn up at the stations and book from there.

Hi there!

It is always good to check coverage and usage of the JR Pass. That's why we have this forum :)

It is true that part of the route to Fuji Kawaguchiko is not covered by the JR Pass. This is because part of the journey is traveled on the Fujikyu railway, which is a privately held company. To travel from Tokyo to Fuji you can use the JR Pass from Tokyo to Otsuki station, from Otsuki station you'll use the Fujikyu line for the last part to Fuji Kawaguchiko (this is 1,110yen/one way). Even so the JR Pass is well worth it.

As for seat reservations, it is pretty normal to just go the station and make seat reservations just before departure. The only moment when I would not recommend doing this is during national holidays.

Hope this helps!
Daniel

Thank you so much as always, Daniel! :) I really appreciate it a ton!
I will be in Japan from Mar 5 to the 14th and thought to buy a one way from the airport and start using the pass on the 9th for the Tokyo-Fuji-Kyoto-Tokyo part. Do you think that makes sense?

Yes that's exactly what I'd do. The key to using the JR Pass is to cover as much travel as you can with it and this is exactly the right way!

You could even add a visit to Osaka or Nara from Kyoto to really make to most of your pass, however no man overboard if you want to enjoy Kyoto.
