Narita to Kyoto and back

Hi,
My wife and I are arriving at Narita on 3/31 and are planning on traveling to Kyoto that day. We will be returning to Tokyo on 4/3 and will leave Narita on 4/4 (a quick trip!). I am struggling to understand if I should just get a standard JR pass and if so can I reserve seats on the Hikari each way or do I need a First Class pass to be in the Green Car - is this the only way to reserve seats? We were also advised to change trains at Shinagawa rather than Tokyo. We will stay near Shinagawa on 4/3.
Many thanks for your advice. Dave

Hi there,

You can use the normal JR-Pass for the entire journey and to seat reservations for normal seats. For Green class (1st Class) a JR Green Pass is needed. Green Class offers more space and quiet than normal class and some other small amenities, most people will go for the normal pass but going green is a great choice too!

The Shinkansen, perhaps better knows as the bullet train outside of Japan stops at both Tokyo station and Shinagawa, either station is fine.

Hope this helps,
Daniel

Many thanks for the reply, very helpful and you've clarified my confusion.

We hope to get lucky and have a view of Mt. Fuji on the way down or back - that would be awesome.

Thanks again,

Dave

Hi Dave,

In that case ask for a seat number E and D, from this side you will have the best view of Fuji.

Don't worry however if you sit on the other side of the Shinkansen (A,B or C seats), the train makes a curve around Fuji, so you will be able to see the beautiful mountain from the other-side too but only for a shorter time.

Have a great trip!
-Daniel
