Hi there,

thanks for this helpful forum. We're travelling to Japan for our honeymoon,

I am a bit confused about weighing up the cost of JRP vs paying for individual tickets. Can you help?

We are flying to Narita aiport Monday 8th Sept and staying near asakusa station.
9th Sept - explore tokyo (metro)
10th Sept day trip to Nikko
11th sept day trip to Kamakura
12th Sept Asakusa to Hakone
13th Hakone
14th Hakone to Kyoto
15th explore Kyoto
16th Explore Kyoto
17th Kyoto to Tokyo (staying near narita airport)

Would it be cheaper to get a JRP and what day would you activate it?

Thanks so much for your help!!

Hello there,

A 7 day JR Pass would help you make great savings! I would recommend switching Kamakura and Nikko around and then activate your JR Pass on the 11th. This way you would make the most of your JR Pass and make the following savings.

Tokyo - Nikko ¥ 5,780
Nikko - Tokyo ¥ 5,780
Tokyo - Hakone (Odawara station) ¥ 3,940
Odawara - Kyoto ¥ 12,280
Kyoto - Narita Airport ¥ 16,380

For a total of ¥ 44,160 or¥ 15,050 in savings, as the 7 day JR Pass is ¥ 29,110.

Happy travels!
Daniel

Many thanks - that is so helpful. We have just ordered 2 JR passes !

Can we reserve seats on trains from the UK or do we do this once we get to Tokyo?

How far in advance would you recommend booking seats for these popular destinations?

Thanks again!
