Hi,

I will be travelling to Japan this February and I would like to understand more about the JR Pass usage & train route.

I used Hyperdia to check the route from Narita Airport Terminal 2 to Katsuragawa (Kyoto):

NARITA AIRPORT TERMINAL 2
NIPPORI
TOKYO
KYOTO
KATSURAGAWA(KYOTO)

(link: http://www.hyperdia.com/en/cgi/en/search.html?dep_node=NARITA%20AIRPORT%20TERMINAL%202&arv_node=KATSURAGAWA(KYOTO)&via_node01=&via_node02=&via_node03=&year=2015&month=02&day=27&hour=14&minute=00&search_type=0&search_way=&transtime=undefined&sort=0&max_route=5&faretype=0&ship=off&lmlimit=null&search_target=route&facility=reserved&sum_target=7)

Does that mean that we have to stop by every station (e.g. nippori, tokyo, kyoto) to catch a different train? If that is the case, how do I go about reserving seats for all the trains using my ordinary Jr Pass?

Hope to receive your advice.. Thank you.

Hi there,

I'd advise taking the following route.

Narita Airport --> Tokyo with the Narita Express
Tokyo - Kyoto --> With the Shinkansen
Kyoto - Katsuragawa --> JR Kyoto Line Rapid Service

This will minimize transfers and make the route all covered by the JR Pass.

Reservations can be made at the JR office @Narita Airport. The JR Kyoto Line Rapid Service is a local service and does not have reserved seats. So just ask for a ticket Narita Airport - Kyoto when making reservations.

Hope this helps,
Daniel
