We are travelling with 5 persons from Kyoto to Nozawa Onsen on 16 January 2017.

  1. What is the best route, departure and arrival times and total travel time.

  2. Alternately is it quicker to get Shinkensans Kyoto to Tokyo to Nozawa Onsen.

  3. If we wish to arrive in Nozawa Onsen by 2-3pm what is the best route.

  4. Is the whole route covered by the Japan Rail Pass.

Hi there,

The route Kyoto - Nozawa looks like this and is fully covered by the JR Pass. An alternative is the use the Shinkansen to Nagano and use a bus from there, however the bus is not included.

Using the link I provided above, you can change the date/time at the bottom of the page to your own liking. All other parameters are set correctly. Note that the train station for Nozawa is called TogariNozawa-Onsen and not Nozawa, using the latter would make you end up somewhere completely different.

Hope this helps,
Daniel

Thankyou

  1. Are there earlier trains to arrive in Nozawa Onsen at 2pm or earlier - please supply timetables.

  2. Is it quicker and how much will we pay for 5 people to take the bus from Nagano, if that section is not covered by the JR Pass.

  3. Your route will take at best 291 minutes. Our travel agent thinks we should instead go via Tokyo - how long would that take.

  4. From TogariNozawa-Onsen station how far and how do we get to the town of Nozawa Onsen. Also do you have any idea of the cost.

  5. How much is a JR Pass for 4 x Adults and child of 15 for 7 days.

Thanks for your help - we really appreciate it !

Hi again,

1.) I recommend learning to plan with Hyperdia this way you can find any route/time table and more. Its a great tool for planning with the JR Pass. We also have a useful [interactive map]. You can use this tool to find any route at any date/time.

For example here is the route via Tokyo. As you can see, it takes longer than the previous route. This could change depending on what time you travel.

2,3 and 4.) Having read up a little more on travel to Nozawa Onsen, it looks like the best way to access Nozawa is no longer via Togari-Nozawa-Onsen station but to use the Hokuriku Shinkansen to IIyama station and from there you can use the Nozawa Onsen Liner bus. (<-- link includes timetables and travel costs) Going via Kanazawa is definitely faster to Iiyama than via Tokyo. You can check for yourself using Hyperdia.

5.) Pricing for the JR Pass can be found here.

Hope this helps,
Daniel

Thankyou.

  1. JR Pass is $500 for ist class and $373 for other class for 7 Days. I assume this is in Australian Dollars. What is the difference between the 2 classes?

  2. Can you also please provide itineraries for Tokyo to Hiroshima on 10 January 2017 and Hiroshima to Kyoto on 12 January 2017 leaving 9.00am.

  3. If I want to do my own searches do I always have to UNTICK as you have "NOZOMI/ MIZUHO/ HAYABUSA SHINKANSEN" as you have done.

  4. When I do searches how do i know which sectors may NOT be covered by the JR Pass - as this is very important to know!

Hi Daniel

This has been very very helpful.

  1. For my own searches I just use your format and change the dates and then I should always be covered by the JR Pass.

  2. For your searches which train station in Tokyo do we get the Bullet train Shinkansen Hikiari 507 or 465 at either 9.33 or 9.03.

  3. What times are peak hours in Japan - will we have any problem getting to the Tokyo Station from the Conrad Hotel and how should we get there with all our luggage.

Warm Regards
Ecka

Hi Ecka,

That's good to hear!

1.) Yes, if you use the same Parameters as me, then you can find routes that are covered by the JR Pass.

2.) Tokyo is simply Tokyo station, its one of the busiest stations in the world. Don't get lost inside!

3.) Rush hour is between 6:30 - 9:30 and 17:00-19:30. This mostly applies to local commuter trains. Shinkansen and long distance trains tend to be more busy during the weekend.

The Conrad hotel is close to Shimbashi station in Tokyo. You can use the JR Yamanote line to Shimbashi from Tokyo station and use a taxi from there to the hotel, or just walk.

Hope this helps,
Daniel

A few more queries.

  1. We are staying at the Conrad Hilton Tokyo - where is the nearest JR train station to activate the 7 Day Pass.

  2. Can we activate the 7 Day Pass PRIOR to the commencement of the 7 days.

  3. Is there a fee to reserve our seats in advance. Can we only reserve seats after we activate the Pass.

Kind Regard
Ecka

Hi Ecka,

Sorry for the delay in response! I remember reading your questions and thought I had answered.

1.) Both Shinagawa and Tokyo station are very close to your hotel. You can exchange the JR Pass at either station.

2.) Yes, you can exchange the JR Pass and select your 1st day of use. This can be done up to 30 days before starting your JR Pass.

3.) Yes, seat reservations can be made free of charge from the day that you have exchanged the JR Pass (even if you don't start using it right away).

Kind regards,
Daniel
