JR Pass vs Individual Tickets

I am planning a trip to Japan and am trying to decide whether to buy a JR Pass (7 day or 14 day?) or to buy individual tickets. Any advice appreciated. My itinerary as follows:

5 July - Arrive in Tokyo
11 July - Tokyo to Hakone
12 July - Hakone to Nagoya
12 July - Nagoya to Kyoto
17 July - Kyoto to Tokyo
20 July - Depart Tokyo

Hello there,

I checked your itinerary for the best option. Which includes the following travel.

Tokyo - Odawara ¥ 3,740
Odawara - Nagoya ¥ 8,940
Nagoya - Kyoto ¥ 5,590
Kyoto - Tokyo ¥ 13,600

For a total for ¥ 31,870, the 7 day JR Pass is ¥ 29,110. So you would certainly be able to make savings with it. The JR Pass can also be useful if you plan to make day trips from Kyoto, for instance travel to Osaka and Nara is also included.

Hope this helps,

Hi Daniel

Thanks for the response.

The itinerary is over more than 7 days which means I'd have to get a 14 day pass. Is that still worth it?

Hi again!

Yes I noticed, still I would recommend a 7 day JR Pass for the period 11th - 17th. This way you can use a JR Pass for the above travel, make nice savings and use normal tickets for the rest.

Sorry I should have added this before.
