JR pass routes and how to immediately tell which trains are covered by JR Pass

Hi. Please let me know what's the best route using JR pass for the following:

  • Shinimamiya to Otsuki
  • Otsuki to Hakuba
  • Hakuba to Heiwadai
  • Heiwadai to Tokyo Station (also, can I use my JR pass if from Tokyo Station I want to go to Ginza, or is it within walking distance)?
  • Heiwadai to Asakusa (is it right that I can only use my JR pass up to Ueno and then pay an additional charge from Ueno to Asakusa)
  • Odaiba to Haneda
  • Haneda to Gotemba
  • Heiwadai to Sakuragicho
  • Heiwadai to Haneda

I'm particularly confused about the use of Limited Express trains or any other trains that do not have "JR" in their names but are still covered by JR pass (for example Tokyo Monorail and Limited Express Kaiji 109).

When I use Hyperdia, for example, if the train icon is GREEN, does it automatically mean it's covered by JR Pass?

Could you teach me how to tell the difference between JR and non-JR trains if there's no "JR" in the name?

Thank you so much!

I also have an additional question. On my first three days, I will be using a Kansai Area pass. Is it okay to use this pass for the following routes:

Kansai Airport -> Limited Express Haruka 42 going to Tennoji -> JR Yamatoji Line Local for JR Namba to SHIN-IMIMAMIYA

Can I also use my Kansai Area Pass to reach the following stations: Gion, Nijo, Inari, Higashiyama, Kiyomizu-gojo?

Thank you!

Hello there,

Most routes can be found by inputting them in www.hyperdia.com, since the optimal route can depend a lot of what time of day you travel, I recommend looking them up that way.

You know what the JR Pass covers the route if you leave the options: Private Railway/NOZOMI / MIZUHO /
HAYABUSA (SHINKANSEN)/Airplane deselected. For further information on how to plan with Hyperdia see this page.

To give you a couple expert tips:
-The Tokyo Monorail is also included but Hyperdia sees it as a private railway. (Leave the private railway option on for this, important when you travel to Haneda). -The Ltd Kaiji is covered by the JR Pass. -We also have a map with all JR lines covered nationwide:http://www.jrpass.com/map

The Kansai area pass is valid for:Limited Express Haruka 42 going to Tennoji -> JR Yamatoji Line Local for JR Namba to SHIN-IMIMAMIYA but is almost useless within Kyoto, as there are no JR lines to the places you wish to visit. Only between Kyoto station and Inari could it save you a tiny amount.

Hope this helps,
Daniel
