JR Pass or normal tickets or Suica

4 of us will be travelling from Nov 19-29. We arrive in Osaka (3 nights), then travel to Kyoto (4N), then travel to Tokyo (3N).
Is it worth getting a JR pass? 7 days is too little and 14 days is too much.
Can the JR pass be used within Osaka and Kyoto? I was informed that it is not very useful in these cities.
If I get a Suica card, can this be used all over Japan?

Thanks,
Perrine

Hello Perrine,

A JR Pass would not help you make savings for this trip. The longer distance trains, especially the Shinkansen, are the ones that cost the most. This is limited in your plan to a one way Tokyo - Osaka.

You can buy an ICOCA card (similar to SUICA) when you arrive in Kansai and use it for most of your travel, except for the Shinkansen trip. Suica is only sold within the JR East area, while ICOCA is sold in the JR West area. They are the same, just different name and issued by a different company.

Hope this helps.
Daniel
