JR PASS or INDV tickets

We are traveling to Osaka from HKong on Oct 29. From Osaka, we were hoping to take day trips to Kyoto or Narra. We are family of 6 with 4 children below 14 yr old. We will be based in Osaka for 4-5 days then the plan is to take a bullet train to Tokyo and stay there for another 2-3 days. After reading several blogs, because of our limited "long distance" travels, it seems that may be better off buying indiviual tickets for separate journeys rather than buying a 7 day JR rail pass? In Tokyo, we only plan to go around the city via subway. Then from Tokyo we go to Narita to fly out on the 5th of November. Will appreciate any advice.

Hi there!

Yes what you are reading is correct, the JR Pass is really amazing if you plan to travel around the country by Bullet train. Since your longer distance travel is limited to a one way ticket Osaka - Tokyo I would recommend buying normal tickets.

When you are in Tokyo, consider buying a One day Metro pass which allows for unlimited travel on the Tokyo Metro and is a great way to get around the capital.

I hope this helps!

Thank you so much. Arigato gozaimas , Daniel-san. Am the same person for some reason I had to reset my account.
So its going to be cheaper to also buy Osaka-Kyoto, Osaka-Narra (in case we add Narra to the itinerary) individually?

And these individual tickets can be bought from easily from the stations? Is there a site where we can book tickets for these tickets?

Thank you again

Hi Again,

Yes local travel around Kyoto, Osaka and Nara is not very expancive, for instance a one way ticket Kyoto - Osaka is 540 yen and a one way ticket Osaka - Nara is ¥ 780. These are all local trains which depart on a regular basis, all local trains in Japan are non reserved. So you don't have to worry about reserving tickets before hand.

I hope this helps too!
Daniel
