Hi there! I'll be heading to Japan from 23Dec-1Jan and will be traveling to Osaka (from Tokyo), Kawaguchiko (from Osaka) and Tokyo (from Kawaguchiko).

  1. Is it worth it to get a 7 Days JR Pass?
  2. Is the JR Pass useful when in traveling around Tokyo?
  3. Will there be instances where by tickets are all sold out even with a JR Pass?

Hello there,

1.) Yes, if you can make the return to Tokyo within 7 days, then a 7 day JR Pass would be worth it.

2.) Yes, the JR Pass covers all JR lines in Tokyo, such as the Yamanote loop line that stops at many important stations (Tokyo, Shinjuku, Harajuku, Ueno, etc).

3.) Trains rarely sell out, only during national holiday periods does this happen. In such cases it is recommended to reserve a seat in advance. The new year period is such a time but you can make your reservations the moment that you are in Japan and will need find any trouble if you do so 2-4 days in advance.

Hope this helps,
Daniel

Thank you Daniel-san for your reply. Last question, do I also have to make a reservation if I have a NEX Round Pass??

Yes, the narita express is by reservation only. However you can get them right away when you buy the return ticket.
