Hi

We are a family of 5 (2 adults + 3 kids 12, 12 and 10 years old)
We will be in Japan next week for 7 days ; our itinerary will be :
- arrival at Hiroshima airport - 3 nights in Hiroshima - 1 night in Miyajima - 3 nights in Onomichi

I intend to use train transportation system
- from airport to Hiroshima city - from Hiroshima to Miyajima - from Miyajima to Onomichi - from Onomichi to Hiroshima airport

But I am wondering if it worths buying the JR Pass 7 days (38880 Yen per person) for these local journeys.

Please advise
Thank you for your help

Hi Olivier,

Hiroshima, Onomichi and Miyajima are all great and close together. Buying a JR Pass would not make sense for such small journeys and the best way would simply be to buy normal tickets locally.

A JR Pass is best used when traveling between different cities, such as Kyoto, Tokyo and Hiroshima.

Hope this helps!
Daniel

Hi,

As said, a JR Pass wouldn't make sense, but a Hiroshima-Yamaguchi Area pass might. You could certainly use it to branch out more, and there is a lot in the area to see - and most of it is off the tourist radar so they are uncrowded. Three nights in Hiroshima and 3 more in Onomichi look excessive anyway. Miyajima is probably the biggest places to see in the region, but aside from the "floating" giant torii gate and shrine, the Daishoin Temple is equally impressive and the climb to the top of Mt. Misen offers a magnificent view over the island and whole area.
For Onomichi, its temple tour is what most people go to see, but few go to see the fantastically ornate Kosanji Temple which is like a Buddhist Disneyland. Just a bit past Miyajima is Iwakuni with its iconic historical bridge and mountaintop castle -- well worth going to see. Not to be missed in the area is Akiyoshido which is a 300 million year old limestone cave 1km deep with an underground river and giant caverns. Taikodani is also a beautiful shrine in Tsuwano, Shimane - far from the noisy crowds and full of old charm that few go to see. Hagi Castle was actually delightful, and the preserved samurai district and Mori Clan related temples a rarity.
You can see a whole range of new places and certainly get your money's worth out a regional rail pass.

Best of luck.
