Hi

We will be in Tokyo on the 3 April to 9 April and maybe a few side trips.

On the 9 April we will travel to Nagano and then onto Yudanaka.

On the 10 April we will travel to Kanazawa for 4 nights and maybe do some daytrips.

On 14 April we will be in Kyoto for 6 nights

On 20 April we will travel to Okayama for three nights and do daytrips to Miyajima and Kurashiki.

On 23 we will travel to Mount Koya

And then one night at the airport hotel in Kansai.

Should we buy a 14 day pass or 21 day pass?

If I look at the Tokyo Rail map then only the thin grey line and dotted line is JR in Tokyo map?
Will this mean we still have to buy the Suica ticket as well? Or maybe Hop on or off in Tokyo?

Hello there,

Let's have a look at ticket prices to see if the JR Pass will be of use.

Tokyo - Nagano ¥ 8,400
Nagano - Kanazawa ¥ 7,310
Kanazawa - Kyoto ¥ 7,100
Kyoto - Okayama ¥ 7,550
Okayama - Kurashiki (return) ¥ 640
Okayama - Hiroshima ¥ 6,220
Hiroshima - Miyajima (return) 1,140
Hiroshma - Osaka (for Mt. Koya) ¥ 10,430

For a total of ¥ 48,790. Note that the fare to Kanazawa may be a little higher, as the Hokuriku Shinkansen will be done by them, however we don't have the fares yet. From here you could either look at the 14 day JR Pass or 21 day JR Pass. The 14 day JR Pass would be best used for April 9th - 22nd and would work best if you could arrive in Osaka on the 22nd, this would allow for the best savings.

You could also consider the 21 day JR Pass, which would give you 7 days more of travel. At the same time, I would recommend making a couple of day trips from Tokyo in order to get the best value out of the pass. Such as a trip to Nikko or Fuji.

The JR Pass covers all JR lines in Tokyo. Click the link for a full map. You can hop on and off as you wish. A Suica card can still be useful if you use other transport than JR.

Hope this helps,
Daniel
