questions & answers: using the japan rail pass

jr east-south hokkaido pass or jr pass

JR East-South Hokkaido Pass or JR Pass

I will be travelling to Japan next week, itinenary as follow:-

Day 1 : Sapporo
Day 2-4 : Noboribetsu - Hakodate
Day 5 -6: Hakodate - Kawaguchiko
Day 7-8 : Kawaguchiko - Tokyo
Day 9 : Depart Japan

1) I am abit confused, the JR East-South Hokkaido Pass allows for any 6 days, does it have to be 6 consecutive days or I can select to use on day 1 and then day 4-8?
2) Also, is it that the JR East-South Hokkaido Pass does not cover JR buses but JR Pass does?
3) According to this itinenary, which pass will be more suitable?

Looking forward for your replies.
Thank you very much.

Hi there,

1.) The JR East-South Hokkaido Pass can be used for 6 days within a 14 day period.

2.) This is correct.

3.) Both a 7 day JR Pass and JR East-South Hokkaido Pass have pros and cons for your itinerary. You could use a 7 day JR Pass and cover all travel from day 1-7, which by far is your most expensive travel route. You can also use a JR East-South Hokkaido Pass and select 6 days of your own choosing.

If you wish to purchase the JR East-South Hokkaido Pass, please send us an e-mail at with your name, address and pass you wish to purchase.

We will take care of the rest from there.
