Hi,

It's my first time to Japan and I'm a little confused with the options of the Japan Rail Pass or Regional Tourist Passes. Could you please advise if I should get a Japan Rail Pass or should I get individual area/regional tourist passes (as per the below) for the following itinerary.

Day 1 Arrive Osaka - Kyoto Single ticket Osaka - Kyoto
Day 2 Kyoto - travel around Kyoto Sanyo Area Pass (4 days)
Day 3 Kyoto - Nara Sanyo Area Pass (4 days)
Day 4 Kyoto - Hiroshima - Miyajima Sanyo Area Pass (4 days)
Day 5 Miyajima - Osaka - Kanazawa Sanyo Area Pass (4 days), then Takayama-Hokoriku Area Pass
Day 6 Kanazawa - Takayama Takayama-Hokuriku Area Tourist Pass (5 days)
Day 7 Takayama (Shirakawa-go) Takayama-Hokuriku Area Tourist Pass (5 days)
Day 8 Takayama (Kamikochi) Takayama-Hokuriku Area Tourist Pass (5 days)
Day 9 Takayama - Nagoya - Hakone Takayama-Hokuriku Area Tourist Pass, then single ticket Nagoya
to Hakone, then Hakone Free Pass Day 10 Hakone - Tokyo - Nikko Hakone Free Pass - 2 days, then All Nikko Pass
Day 11 Nikko All Nikko Pass
Day 12 Nikko - Tokyo (Depart Narita) All Nikko Pass

Any help would be great.

Thank you.

Hi Toraneko,

Thank you for your quick reply. I arrive to Osaka on 2nd June and depart Tokyo on 13th June.

I've had a look at the links that you sent - great info.

So, the itinerary looks like the below:

Jun-02 Arrive Osaka - Kyoto
Jun-03 Kyoto - travel around Kyoto
Jun-04 Kyoto - Nara
Jun-05 Kyoto - Hiroshima - Miyajima
Jun-06 Miyajima - Osaka - Kanazawa

Jun-07 Kanazawa - Takayama
Jun-08 Takayama (Shirakawa-go)
Jun-09 Takayama (Kamikochi)
Jun-10 Takayama - Nagoya - Hakone

Jun-11 Hakone - Tokyo - Nikko

Jun-12 Nikko
Jun-13 Nikko - Tokyo (Depart Narita)

Should I get different regional / tourist passes for the different blocks or should I just get one Japan Rail Pass for the trip?

Thank you.

Hi there,

I had a look at your itinerary to find the best option and would recommend a 7 day JR Pass. You could make very good savings over normal tickets by using it from Jun 5 - June 11. This would cover most of your otherwise expansive travel and you could supplement the 7 day JR Pass with local tickets in Kansai (Kyoto, Osaka, Nara) and from Nikko - Narita Airport.

You can also consider a Hakone Free Pass, depending on how much travel you plan to do within Hakone. Generally the pass is used well when making a circle trough the region or if you at least spend two days there.

Hope this helps,
Daniel
