Hi,

Me and my friends are planning to visit Japan this November and currently we are planing it as effective as possible.
we're going to visit Osaka,Nara,Kyoto,Kobe, and Tokyo. We'll be arriving in Osaka and depart from Tokyo.
here are some questions we would like to make sure, as with this quite a nimber of cities to visit some friend suggested us to buy JRP :
1. Does JRP available in the particular city? I mean, do we still have to purchase another kind of trakn tickey to sightseeing inside Osaka,Kyoto,Nara,Kobe,Tokyo?
2. Do you have any suggestion on our itinerary? Is the scheduled tight enough? Fy, we will be there from 1-9 november :)
3. We decide to stay in 2 cities, Osaka and Tokyo, as Kyoto,Nara, and Kobe is closed to Osaka. Does the JRP can be used inside those cities to sightseeing?

Thank you :)

Hi there!

Before looking at your questions I checked whether a JR Pass would be helpful for your travel. But I have to say that it would be better to purchase tickets locally, the JR Pass works wonders when you travel cross country and visit different regions. In your case, travel is limited to two areas Kansai (Osaka,Kyoto, Kobe and Nara) and then Tokyo. Travel costs within Kansai are low and your expansive travel is limited to a one way travel Kansai - Tokyo and right now a JR Pass would not pay off. A better alternative would be to buy an IC card such as ICOCA and use that to pay for your travel.

I also included to answer to your question, in case plans change and a JR Pass would be of use.

1.) The JR Pass is valid valid between all these places and also for local JR lines in all cities. In Tokyo and Osaka for instance this is more than enough to get to around both cities. However in same cases you may also have to use other transport methods such as the Metro, Tram or Bus which are not included in the pass.

2.) I see no problem here at all, of course the more time in Japan the better :)

3.) Yes the JR Pass can be used for sightseeing and visiting the areas around Osaka and Tokyo.

Hope this helps!
Daniel

Hi Daniel,

Thanks a lot for the explanation.
i juat googled another info again and came accroas the info regarding JR pass Kansai area, with a more friendly fare. As we also plan to visit some cities in Kansai, do you think it would be more beneficial and economical to purchase that JR pass type?

Before thinking on purchasing JR pass, we sorta considering to just having a city by city rail ticket and hop to another city by buss. But seeing this JR pass in kansai area, i guess we can also consider that pass.
they also mention that using this JR pass kan get you unlimited travel within kansai area, but limited to any kind of shikansen.

tben pehaps maybe you can suggest what kind of train that can be applicable with this JR pass to go Kyoto/Nara from Osaka?
And is this pass can also be used inside Osaka and travel from Osaka to Tokyo by trai ?

Thank you :)

Hi Again!

Generally I don't recommend the JR Kansai Pass, this because travel around Kansai is rather cheap and you need to do at least 2,000yen worth of travel on each day to make the Kansai pass pay off. Also the Kansai Area pass is not valid on any Shinkansen! So again, just buying normal tickets is probably best.

Hope this answers your question :)
Daniel
