Hi, we are planning a 12-day trip to Japan around oct. 2016, here's our temporary itinerary:

Day 1,2,3 - Tokyo
Day 4 - Tokyo -> Takayama ... assume this is covered by JR pass
Day 5 - Takayama
Day 6 - Takayama -> Magome and hike to Tsumago ... assume this is not covered by JR pass
Day 7 - Tsumago -> Kyoto ... assume Nagiso -> Nagoya -> Kyoto is covered by JR pass
Day 8, 9 10 - Kyoto
Day 11 - Kyoto-> Tokyo ... assume this is covered by JR pass

Could you please tell me:
- is my assumption above correct? It seems the 7 day JR pass will not be able to cover all the transportation, is that correct? - what would be your advise of my options

thank you.

Hello Anne,

I like the idea behind your itinerary, visiting the Japanese Alps and Kyoto is great!

The most important thing regarding your itinerary is the use of the 7 day JR Pass. Right now the period Day 4 - Day 11 is 8 days. Consider spending one day less in Kyoto or traveling back to Tokyo late on day 10. This way you can limit your major travel to 7 days and get the best our of the 7 day JR Pass.

Travel to Takayama is covered, most travel to Magome and Tsumago is included too.

Hope this helps,
Daniel
