Is it worth exchanging the Flexible 4-day Rail Pass for the train from NCT?

Hello,

I'm planning a 9-day trip to Hokkaido this Oct. Please see the itinerary as follows:

Day 1: Sapporo
Day 2: Otaru (day trip)
Day 3: Jozankei
Day 4: Sapporo
Day 5: Lake Toya
Day 6: Hakodate
Day 7: Hakodate
Day 8: Noboribetsu
Day 9: Chitose (for an early flight home)

I'm thinking of buying a Flexible 4-day Rail Pass. It says on the leaflet that the pass is activated the day of purchase OR exchange. I'm wondering if it is more economical for me to exchange it when I travel to Lake Toya.

Another thing that I need clarifying is the word "or" in the information given. I plan to purchase the pass from outside Japan and exchange it on a later day once I'm in Japan. Which day will be regarded as the first day?

Thank you.

Hi there,

By making a return Sapporo - Hakodate, a JR Hokkaido Pass already pays of. Lake Toya, is quite a long trip so it would make sense to use it there.

The 1st day is a day you can select yourself when you activate the JR Pass in Japan.

Hope this helps,
Daniel
