How to get to nikko from ikebukuro with the JR rail pass?

How do i get to nikko from ikebukuro with the JR rail pass? Do i go with shinkansen, or the limited expressed to nikko from shinjuku( is there any extra charge)

Please let me know both the fastest way and the way with no extra charge please, thank you

Hi there,

Using the JR Pass: take a local train from Ikebukuro to either Ueno or Tokyo station. There transfer to the Tohoku Shinkansen to Utsunomiya. Here transfer to the local JR Nikko line (to Nikko).

You can also use the Tobu Nikko ltd. express train from Shinjuku, this requires an additional fare around 1,500yen.
