Hokkaido/JR Pass and travel from Sapporo to Tokyo

Hi,

My wife and I are planning a trip to Japan in Feb 2015. We're thinking of using the JR pass for trips around Tokyo and Osaka and then head over to Sapporo on the last day of our JR pass. (There are plenty of posts regarding the Tokyo to Sapporo trip on this forum--thanks!) Within Hokkaido, we'll use a JR Hokkaido Pass to get around. Our question is: can we use the Hokkaido pass to get back to Tokyo?

If we can only get back to Tokyo from Hokkaido using the JR Pass, does it make sense to get a longer-period JR pass and try to use the JR pass in Hokkaido as much as possible?

Thanks in advance!

Hello James,

The JR Pass covers travel to and within Hokkaido, the JR Hokkaido pass is only limited for Hokkaido itself. Traveling between Hokkaido and Tokyo can get pretty expensive. I would advise using a longer period JR pass, given that your itinerary allows it, to cover both travel within and after Hokkaido. A one way ticket Sapporo - Tokyo is ¥ 24,340, which is almost the price of a 7 day JR Pass alone.

Hope this helps!
Daniel
