We would love some help figuring out what makes the most sense for our trip - family of 4 - all over the age of 12. I am a travel writer and I am finding this challenging!

Thinking that a 7 day JR Pass would work for Days 6- 12 - thoughts?

Thinking a JR East pass for some of the days between 1 and 4 (didn't know which ones) for the regional pass

We are flexible on the day trip days for Nikko and Kamakura and can do them any days we are in Tokyo.

Thanks for any help! I really appreciate your expertise and opinions and experiences!

Lisa

Day 1 Fly into Haneda, TRAIN to Tokyo (local travel only) (sleep in Tokyo)
Day 2 Tokyo (local travel only) (sleep in Tokyo)
Day 3 Tokyo (day trip to Nikko - TRAINS to and from Nikko) (sleep in Tokyo)
Day 4 Tokyo (local travel only) (sleep in Tokyo)
Day 5 TRAIN from Tokyo to Odawara (sleep in Odawara)
Day 6 TRAIN from Odawara to Hakone then TRAIN from Hakone to Nagoya (sleep in Nagoya)
Day 7 TRAIN from Nagoya to Kyoto (sleep in Kyoto)
Day 8 TRAIN from Kyoto to Osaka (sleep in Osaka)
Day 9 TRAIN from Osaka to Kyoto and TRAIN back from Kyoto to Osaka(sleep in Osaka)
Day 10 Osaka day (NO TRAIN, local travel only), (sleep in Osaka)
Day 11 TRAIN from Osaka to Hiroshima, FERRY to Mejima Island (stay in Mejima)
Day 12 FERRY to Hiroshima, TRAIN to Tokyo (sleep in Tokyo)
Day 13 Tokyo Day trip to Kamakura by TRAIN (sleep in Tokyo)
Day 14 Tokyo (local trains, sleep in Tokyo)
Day 15 TRAIN to Narita

Hi there,

I think a 7 day JR Pass would work well for day 6 to 12. This would give you great savings compared to purchasing normal tickets. At the same time, you could even look at a 14 day JR Pass and include all your travel with it with the exception of the last route back to Narita Airport. This is cheaper than most JR East Passes + a 7 day JR Pass.

Depending on how you want to travel, you could also use local trains for travel around Tokyo and to Nikko, these take a lot more time but can be cheaper. Then you could use a 7 day JR Pass for day 6 - 12.

Hope this helps,
Daniel
