Helllo there,

Tokyo - Takayama ¥ 14,710
Takayama - Kyoto ¥ 9,960
Kyoto - Osaka ¥ 560
Osaka - Tokyo ¥ 14,140

For a total of ¥ 39,370, that's ¥ 7,020 short of the price of a 14 day JR Pass. Basically if you could do at least an other ¥ 7,020 in travel, then a JR Pass would become interesting. This amount is easily reached, for instance with a trip to Himeji or Hiroshima from Osaka or a day trip from Tokyo to Nikko.

Hope this helps,
Daniel

Hi there,

There are no regional passes that cover this route. So in that case it would be best to buy normal tickets.

Do keep in mind that the JR Pass can also be used for local travel within Tokyo and Osaka in addition to Narita Airport, the last alone costs around 3,000yen.

Hello, thank you for your response.
Would your recommendation be to buy normal tickets and not the 14day pass based on my itenary below and knowing I do want to purchase the Gran Glass ticket.
Also, would I be able to purchase the tickets online or can they only be purchased once in Japan ?

Tokyo - 4days
Takayama - 2days
Kyoto- 3days
Osaka - 3days
Tokyo - 4days

-thank you in advance

Hello again!

For this itinerary it would be best to buy normal tickets as you travel.

Also since you travel Gran Class. Tickets can be purchased once you are in Japan at any JR station. It's not possible to do so online.

Looks like a fun trip!

Hello , thank you for your response.

For the trains that do not offer Gran Class would i be able to buy the regular/green class tickets online in the US?
Also , Is there a chance the tickets will be soldout when purchased in japan ?

-thank you in advance

Hi again!

Tickets can only be purchased in person at JR stations or travel offices in Japan. No worry about seats selling out though, during normal days there are plenty of seats to go around and trains rarely sell out.
