Hello,

First time traveler to Japan here. I need some assistance, I arrive (possibly) very late on the 26th May at Haneda, around 11:00 pm. I need to be in Kyoto at around 9 even earlier if I can the next morning.

Can the JR Pass get me there quick enough without having to pay any extra? I have searched these but unsure which one is on the pass - http://www.hyperdia.com/en/cgi/en/search.html?dep_node=HANEDA%20AIRPORT%20TERMINAL%201&arv_node=KYOTO&via_node01=&via_node02=&via_node03=&year=2016&month=05&day=27&hour=06&minute=00&search_type=0&search_way=&transtime=undefined&sort=0&max_route=5&faretype=0&ship=off&lmlimit=null&search_target=route&facility=reserved&sum_target=7

I also need advise to maybe sleep for very cheap at Haneda for a few hours, maybe even in the terminal?

My other option is to land at Narita around 18:00 and travel directly to Kyoto on the 26th May and sleep when I get to Kyoto to be there early morning.

Any advise or suggestions would be appreciated.

Hello Brett,

I am afraid that the Nozomi train is not included in the JR Pass.

Using the JR Pass the route would look like this. You can of course just buy normal tickets and use the route that you already found.

Hope this helps,
Daniel

Hi Daniel,

So in essence I can follow Route 1 in the link and I will be in Kyoto by 9:15 on the 27 May? This looks like my best option and I think it will work perfectly. The event I am attending in Kyoto is set to start at 10:00 so it gives me 45m to get the event in Kyoto.

If I land at 11:00 pm, do you know if I can sleep in a room at the airport as I must catch the first train at 5:59.

Thank you for help so far, really appreciate it.

Brett

Hi Brett,

Which route are you referring to in your last link? In any event, all routes are covered but I do not think that Route 3 would be practical.

Coming back on the Haneda option, while this route is covered by the JR Pass you would still have to exchange the JR Pass before and I am afraid that the exchange window only opens at 7:30 at Tokyo station or 7:45 at Haneda.

Hi,

Thanks. What time does it close at both airports?

Maybe then better to choose Narita and Route 1 from the above link.

I will not make it to Kyoto if I travel on the morning of the 27th.

Hi,

I think Narita is better, will route 3 be okay on JR Pass

(http://www.hyperdia.com/en/cgi/en/search.html?dep_node=NARITA%20AIRPORT%20TERMINAL%201&arv_node=TOKYO&via_node01=&via_node02=&via_node03=&year=2016&month=05&day=26&hour=20&minute=00&search_type=0&search_way=&transtime=undefined&sort=0&max_route=5&faretype=0&airplane=off&ship=off&sprnozomi=off&privately=off&lmlimit=null&search_target=route&facility=reserved&sum_target=7) when I land and then I can catch Tokyo to Kyoto early on Friday.

Maybe this is my best option so far.

Hi again,

Yup! Route 3 works fine using the JR Pass.

If you are really eager, you could also travel a bit further, say to Shizuoka or Nagoya. This way you'd be closer to Kyoto and have a bit more flexibility the following morning.

Like this route.

Let me what you think.
