questions & answers: using the japan rail pass

Haneda-->Kyoto-->Hakone-->Tokyo (Ginza)

Hi there,

We're a family of 4 - 2 adults & 2 kids (6yrs & 9yrs) arriving in Tokyo (Haneda) on 6 Dec. This is our travel plan;

  1. Haneda to Kyoto (3 nights in Kyoto)
  2. Kyoto to Hakone (2 nights in Hakone)
  3. Hakone to Tokyo (5nights in Tokyo)

We would like some advise on the train travel situation - how/which stations should we be getting?

We'd like to try the Shinkansen as its one of the highlights of this trip - how do we ensure that we get reserved seats on the Haneda to Kyoto leg.

Are there luggage storage companies that we can drop off our luggage with when we arrive and get them to deliver it to us when we're back in Tokyo?

Thanks very much in advance for your assistance.

Hello there,

Basically, there are 3 main questions here.

How to get from Haneda Airport to Kyoto? The first part is to travel from Haneda to Tokyo station. Take the Tokyo Monorail from Haneda to Hamamatsucho (the last stop for the Monorail), there transfer to the JR Yamanote line bound for Tokyo station. All together this takes about 50 minutes. At Tokyo station, transfer to the Tokaido Shinkansen and take the Hikari Service to Kyoto station. This part takes about 160 minutes.

How to get seat reservations and make sure I have the right seats? You can read about making seat reservation here. In general, just show your JR Pass and tell the staff where you wish to travel. They will then give you seat reservations and always find the best route for you. Note that local train such as the JR Yamanote line and Tokyo Monorail don't have reserved seats, here you just hop on and off.

What about luggage forwarding? There are different luggage forwarding services around Japan, such as black cat by Yamamote transport. Haneda has its own desk for luggage forwarding.

Hope this helps,
