Hi,

We have plan to go Japan, for Tokyo-Kyoto-Osaka for about 12 days.
We will stay at Tokyo abt 7nights, Kyoto 2 nights and the rest at Osaka.
We want to go to Mt fuji as well.

We're not sure do we should buy the JR pass 7 days or we just buy on the spot?
And how to purchase the shinkansen if we don't buy the JR pass?
We will travel with our 2 years daughter, so not sure whether is worth to buy the JR pass?

If can recommend the itinerary, would really appreciate. Thanks

Hi there,

Looking at your itinerary, I think going for normal tickets is the better option. The JR Pass works well if you travel between different regions in Japan a couple of times using the Shinkansen. For instance a return Tokyo - Kyoto can quickly help you make savings. In your itinerary this is mostly a one way trip from Tokyo - Kyoto (with side visit to Fuji).

Shinkansen tickets can be purchased at any JR Station, its very easy and can be done on the day of departure.

Hope this helps,
Daniel

Hi Daniel,

Thanks for your fast reply.

  1. Where to buy the normal ticket? What is the name?
  2. Return Tokyo-Kyoto what pass is that? Is it Kansai wide area pass or west kansai pass or something else?
  3. And is October the weather okay or November will be better?

Thanks.

Hi again!

1.) Normal tickets are just rail tickets you purchase before boarding the train.

2.) The JR Pass is for a return Tokyo - Kyoto, will you return to Tokyo after Osaka? In that case I recommend using a 7 day JR Pass.

3.) The weather in October is more mild than in November.

Hope this helps too!
Daniel

Hi,

Yes i will return to Tokyo after Osaka. But if i purchase the JR pass 7 days when i should use it?
Because, when i reach Tokyo then i will spend 4 nights, Kyoto another 2 nights, Osaka another 3 nights then will back Tokyo.

Hi again!

Sorry, it was not clear to me that you would return to Osaka from your 1st post. In this case a 7 day JR pass is well recommended. You can use it for both travel between Tokyo - Kyoto - Osaka - Tokyo and also for local travel in many cases.

So basically use the JR Pass for travel to Kyoto, Osaka and back to Tokyo.

Hi Daniel,

Thanks for your reply.

Just to clarify, so since i will go for 12 days, do you suggest that the first 5 days in Tokyo I use normal ticket
and the rest I use 7 days JR pass?

I live in Singapore, should i buy the JR pass in singapore or Tokyo?
What is the best transport from Tokyo to Mt Fuji?

Thanks
