Hi there. Me and 2 friend of my will arrive in Narita on December 11th and we booked a Hotel for 7days at a nearby Hotel from Narita Airport. Our plan is to stay nearby the airport and travel to the games from Narita. The 12th the game will be in Toyota and on the 16th in Yokohama Stadium then on the days that there's no games we are planning on visiting the best places using the JR pass. Please help us with how can we use the JR pass to go to the games and to tourist spots in Japan all using the JR pass? Also I think on the game days it should have late trains and busses because how would people get back from the games? This is such a big event I am sure it must be something organize for the fans to get to and back from the games. Thanks for the help in advance. Best.

Hi there!

In general you can make great use of the JR Pass to travel around Japan! If you let me know some of the spots you're thinking of I can advise, but from Narita, I recommend visiting Kawaguchiko/Fuji-Q, Hakone, Nikko and of course do some travel around Tokyo over your 7 day period.

For the Toyota stadium you should aim to get to JR Tozoji station in Nagoya and then change to the non-JR Aichi loop line to Shin-Toyota station. For [Yokohama stadium] you'll need to head to JR Kannai station.

Here are some itineraries from Narita to the relevant stations for you:

  1. Narita > Shintoyota: ¥13,690 (251mins, 470km, incl. non-JR)
  2. Shintoyota > Narita: ¥12,780 (253mins, 430km, incl. non-JR)
  3. Narita > Kannai: ¥4,560 (85mins, 100km)
  4. Kannai > Narita: ¥4,370 (112mins, 122km)

On the returns, Yokohama should be no problem to get back to Narita, however do note that the last train from Nagoya to Narita leaves Shintoyota around 8pm (I'm afraid the bullet trains cannot operate late at night for safety reasons). If you want to stay for the end of the game in Toyota I recommend you look for a hotel in Nagoya for the night (Toyoko inn or Dormy Inn are very reasonable for these sorts of things).

Hope this helps!

For those planning to atend for the Fifa Club World Cup keep in mind that the correct stadium for the final match is Nissan Stadium http://www.nissan-stadium.jp/english/. In this situation, the right train station would be shin-yokohama, I supose.
