Exiting stations with JR pass

Hello,

I've been to Japan before, but this will be my first time traveling to Kyoto so I need to get a JR pass instead of using the suica card. My question is how do you exit the stations? I know they don't all have employees at the exits. I distinctly remember the Hachiko exit of Shibuya station had no one working at it when I had a problem with my Suica card. So how does the JR pass work when exiting a station?

Thank you,

--Michael

Hi Michael,

In that case you just over the gate and shout loudly Sonnō jōi!.

In all seriousness, every station has at least one manned gate which you can use instead. Shibuya is quite an exemption for having an unmanned gate at all.

Hope this helps!
Daniel
