Does buying the pass make sense - 28700 yen

So the cost for the pass is coming out to roughly 28700 yen after exchange costs for a Canadian.

Plan is to land in Tokyo on the 9th - use the pass to get into the city.
On the 10th we leave to Osaka directly.
Likely on the 12 we make either a 1 way or return trip from Osaka to Kyoto
From there we would like to make our way back to Tokyo but making a stop for a day somewhere around MT Fuji until we return back to Tokyo where we will stay until the 18th pass will be expired by then.

Should we spend the money on the pass up front or just purchase tickets there as I know a lot of the Mt Fuji trains are not included with the JR Pass.

Also - Other consideration here is would it just be slightly more to not use the JR pass but be able to book the faster Nizomi train which is not included? this looks like it would save us some time traveling down to Osaka on the first one way there.

Hi there,

Looking at your itinerary I do think that a 7 day JR Pass could be useful for your travel. A return Tokyo - Osaka with the JR Pass as about the same price as the cost of a normal return by Shinkansen. Basically any additional travel you than make with the JR Pass is what you save. Such as travel from the Airport and between Tokyo and Kyoto.

When you travel to Fuji, the best way to get there is actually via Tokyo. Unless you plan to visit Hakone, in which case you can make a stop directly on route to Tokyo.

As you already know the Nozomi train is not covered by the JR Pass, however you can take the Hikari or Kodama instead, these trains travel the exact some route but make a couple more stops on the way and take a little more time. From the difference in time from Tokyo - Osaka is about 20 more minutes of train travel with the Hikari.

I hope this helps!
Daniel
