Do I need 7 day JR pass?

Hi,

Our family of 4 (2 adult and 2 children, one child is already 13) have planned a 9 day trip to Tokyo / Hakone from 30/3 to 7/4 which also happen to be the golden week. We are landing at Narita and heading to Tokyo first. We are staying at the hotel above Tokyo station. We will be visiting different places and travelling on trains in Tokyo.

30/3 - 1/4 Tokyo (travelling within Tokyo)
2/4 - 4/4 Hakone
5/4 - 7/4 Tokyo (Disneyland on 5/4 and 6/4)

May I know is it advisable to buy 7-day JR pass? If it is, should it be used from day 1 or should I start using only the last 7 days in Tokyo?

If I choose not to buy 7 day pass, what other kind of transport card can I buy?

Also, may I know how do I get to Pokemon Centre from Tokyo station?

Appreciate your help.

Hi there,

I think for this trip I would not recommend a 7 day JR Pass. You should use a combination of:

  1. [Narita Express to Tokyo + prepaid SUICA card combo] with the N'EX + Suica package (¥5,500 return)
  2. Hakone Freepass, which will give you 2 days of return travel from Shinjuku over the entire Hakone area for ¥5000

The Suica pre-paid card will give you access to all JR and metro lines in Tokyo and can be re-charged at all stations and metro stops.

Regarding the N'EX + SUICA card, there is no combined ticket for children, however you will still be able to purchase child priced N'EX tickets and a special children's Suica card (Kodomo-yo suica). The N'EX trips will be 50% of the adult fare (so ¥1470 each way). The Suica card will cost ¥2000 to purchase (¥500 deposit and ¥1500 travel value), however the actual charges applied to the prepaid suica card on use will be 50% of the normal adult fare. So your childs ¥2000 Kodomo-yo Suica will allow the equivalent travel to an adult spending ¥3500.

For the Pokemon Centre you should make your way to Hamamatsucho station via the Yamanote line (5 mins, itinerary). From here it is a simple walk to the Pokemon centre. Here is a map showing the pokemon centre near to Hamamatsucho station.

Hope this helps!
