Hi, Can I use the Rail Pass (2 weeks) for the complete journey between:

Kyoto-Takayama
Takayama-Kanazawa
Kanazawa-Kobe
Kobe-Hiroshima
Hiroshima-
Hakata-Tokyo

Hyperdia mentions that the pass might not be valid but does not mentions which part of the trip, perhaps it s a general disclaimer?

Thanks for your help

Hi there,

I can confirm that rail travel between all these cities is included in the JR Pass.

The notice at the bottom of Hyperdia is indeed a general disclaimer.

Hope this helps!
Daniel

Hi Daniel,

Thanks for your reply. I have some more typical questions foreigners ask who are trying to grasp the logic of the Japanese railway system :)

-Not all trains I am going to use have green class I think (Okayama- Uno ll need those seats?

Appreciate your advice,

kind regards

Hi Daniel,
Sorry, some text is missing. I repeat here: 1. how do you proceed if you have green class pass and the train doesn't have green class? 2. Is it possible to travel with standard class pass and upgrade to green class for 1 or 2 traintrips? 3. And travelling with luggage, some pictures of trains indicate space behind the first row of chairs. How do you indicate that during reservation in the green class option.
kinds regards

Hi again!

1.) You can always use a normal seat if no Green Seats are available, or the train does not have Green Seats.

2.) Yes, this is possible but very expensive, as you will have to pay the full Green seat fare. This is about half the price of a train ticket.

3.) Generally you can use the last area of the train car to place your suitcase, or simply put it in a place where there are no passengers. There's not a lot of extra luggage space available, so try to limited yourself to one suitcase per person. There's no special procedure for luggage when reserving seats.

Hope this helps!
Daniel

Hi Daniel-san,

One week on the railroads in Japan! All is well, but two times the JR Ticket Office didn't make a reservation for green class, however the green class wagon was nearly empty and we were put in a standard class car with reserved seat. Can you imagine a reason? And is it at that moment possible to go to the green class and take seat?

And do you know which track the Shinkansen Hikari 461 uses at Himeji station at 10.50 AM direction Okayama? Hyperdia doesn't give a track number.

Thanks for your answers!

Hi again!

Most people travel by normal class and I think that the JR Staff may not have seen that you had a Green Seat. Just check the ticket you get at the point of reservation.

In general it should be no problem to move up to Green Class if there's been a mistake with the reservations. Just ask the conductor.

Himeji station only has two Shinkansen platforms, one southbound (to Hiroshima and Hakata) and one North bound to Osaka, Tokyo),.

Make the most of your trip while you are there!
Daniel
