questions & answers: using the japan rail pass

can i take advantage from jrpass travelling between (tokyo, kyoto, osaka and nikko)?

Can I take advantage from JRpass travelling between (Tokyo, Kyoto, Osaka and Nikko)?

Thanks in advance for your quite useful Forum.

We are planning 2 week vacations to Japan and would like to cover the following cities:
- Arriving trough Haneda airport - Tokyo 6 nights, (while there we plan to go the Fuji Mountain) - Kyoto 4 nights, (while there we plan to go to Osaka) - Nikko 2 nights, - Tokyo 1 night - Return through Haneda airport.

My questions are:
Can we use the JRpass for the connections between these cities ?
Can we use JRpass on inner city transports (subway or bus) for Tokyo, Kyoto and Osaka?
Assuming we cannot use for city transports does it makes sense just to get a 7 day pass and pay the return ticket from Nikko to Tokyo?

Many thanks

Hi Jose,

Getting a 7 day JR Pass would certainly be a good idea if you ask me. This because a normal return ticket Tokyo - Kyoto on the Shinkansen is about the same price, so any extra travel you may do with it, is basically what you save!
The JR Pass covers travel between all the cities you plan to visit, although you may resort to travel on private railways when you visit Fuji. My recommendation would be to use to pass the day when you visit Kyoto and use it to visit Nikko as well. This way you would make the most of your pass.

Note that other transport methods such as the metro are not covered by the JR Pass and require a normal ticket.

Have a great trip!
