Buy tickets/ reserve seats?

Hello,

I will be travelling to Japan in May and want to buy a 7day JRpass. Now my question is: once I have the pass, do I need to buy tickets for the trains I want to take or reserve seats or can I simply take them by having the JRPass with me?

Thank you very much

Hi there,

In short: you can do both!

In details: Limited express trains and Shinkansen bullet trains generally have a section of reserved and non-reserved seats. The JR Pass covers both and you can make a free seat reservations beforehand.

Local trains, such as you may find in Tokyo don't have reserved seats. You just hop on and off.

Hope this helps,
Daniel
