My husband and I will be arriving at Haneda airport on the 12th of May for a 13 day holiday. We plan to spend the forst week in and around the Tokyo area and then a few days in Hakone and Kyoto before returning to Tokyo the night before our flight home.
Would we be best to buy a 7 or 14 day rail pass and can we travel easily by bullet train between our chosen destinations.

Many thanks

Hello there,

A 7 day JR Pass will most likely offer the best value for your trip! The 7 day JR Pass basically is the same price as a normal return ticket Tokyo - Kyoto and any additional travel is what you would save. This includes local travel in Tokyo but also the Shinkansen to Hakone (Odawara station). The JR Pass also offers amazing flexibility if you wish to make day trips a little further away from Tokyo.

Hope this helps,
Daniel

Dear Daniel,

Thank-you for your swift reply.

Is there a train pass for the Tokyo area that would be worth our buying for our first week and is train a good way of getting to our hotel in Shiodome from the airport?

Kind Regards

Pauline

Dear Pauline,

The Shiodome is close to Shinbashi station, only 2 stops away on the Tokyo Yamanote line from Tokyo station. To get there take the Narita Express to Tokyo station and from there the Yamanote line. It's a pretty easy trip.

For the rest, I would advise buying normal tickets as you go!

Dear Daniel,

My husband has made contact with some old friends who live in Hammamatsu. We would like to travel from Tokyo to see them and would like to know which train to catch and how frequent the service is.

Many thnaks

Hi there,

I think you mean Hamamatsu?

Trains depart at least 4 times an hour from Tokyo station and take about 90-120 minutes, depending on the train service.

The trip is covered by the JR Pass if you have one.

Hope this helps,
Daniel
