questions & answers: using the japan rail pass

am i choosing the right pass?

Am I choosing the right pass?

Hi,

I am planning to visit Japan this coming May with my husband & 5 y.o kid.
My itinerary is as follows:

8 May
Arrived Kansai Airport (8.25am). Move to Kyoto. Planning to visit :
- Kiyomizudera - Kinkakuji - Fushimi Inari - Nishiki Market

9 May
Spend whole day at Kyoto. Planning to visit
- Togetsukyo Bridge - Bamboo forest at Arashiyama via scenic train (torokko train) -Nijo Castle

10 May
Move to Toyama
- Plan to go to Shirokawago

11 May
Kurobe Alpine
- Starting from Dentetsu Toyama to Shinano Omachi. Plan to overnite at Matsumoto.

12 May
Kamikochi. Move to Nagoya after that. Plan to overnite at Nagoya.

13 May
Move to Nara. Plan to visit:
- Nara Park - Todaiji Temple etc.

14 May
Move to Kansai Airport. Flight depart at 11am.

Based on my research, Im planning to purchase below pass for the whole trip:
1) Takayama Hokuriku Area Pass - use from 8 May to 10 May (14,000 yen for adult, child FOC)
2) Kurobe Alpine Option Ticket + baggage delivery - on 11 May (9000 yen for adult, child FOC. However not sure since JR haven't announced this ticket yet this year)
3) Kintetsu Rail Pass - on 12 May to 14 May. (3600 yen for adult, child FOC)

Is this my best options and value for money for the pass? I sort of notice that for Takayama Hokuriku Pass & Kintetsu Rail pass is for usage of 5 consecutive days and I think since I am only going to use those pass for less than 3 days, I am seeking more cheaper options if any.

Hope you can help.
Thanks.

Hi there,

I read your itinerary and it looks fine to me. It is a lot of different tickets and packages, this does require additional planning instead of using a single ticket like the JR Pass but it should work.

Hope this helps,
Daniel
