Hi,
First by "Osaka New station" I presume you mean Shin-Osaka Station?

Just to be clear, have you activated your JR Pass yet? If so, you can go to Hyperdia and just plug in your starting point and end point, plus date/time that you like. But be sure under "More Options" to deselect "Nozomi..." since you can't ride that on the Pass.

If you have not activated your pass yet, then you have a problem - you'd have to pay the normal fare to Tokyo (e.g. Shinjuku) or pay a bit more to Odawara, where you can activate the Pass, and then begin to use it.

Coming back, you could use the bullet train to Tokyo and then take the Yamanote line as close to Setagaya as you can (you didn't specify where exactly in Setagaya district you plan to go), and then pay the subway fare the rest of the way, if needed.
The Yamanote Line does stop at numerous popular places for tourists though, so it can be quite helpful if you still have time left on your Pass. One of the most popular places to see in Tokyo is the Sensoji Temple. Seeing the Tsukiji Fish Market at the crack of dawn is also something you will never forget. Harajuku on a Sunday afternoon is also mind blowing, and the walk through Meiji Shrine is quite relaxing.

Have a great trip.

I will be in Japan May 23 but will start using the pass May 25. I was told from Yamanashi i have to go to tokyo station and from there activate the pass, is that right? I presume this 7 day pass once activated will be my transport from tokyo to osaka by shinkansen.im travelling alone for the first time so im a bit wary of transport.
thanks

Hi,
If you have not activated it before going to Yamanashi, then yes. But if you are sure you will start using the pass from May 25th, then before you go to Yamanashi, go to a JR office and activate your pass with the first date designated as May 25th. You don't have to activate your pass by making the day of activation the first day of your 7 days. You can find a list of JR offices where you can change your voucher to your pass here.
If you get your pass ready on the 23rd or 24th but with the first day set as the 25th, then you can start using the pass from Yamanashi all the way to Osaka and back.

If you'd like to enhance the savings of your pass further, take at least half a day to see Himeji nearby, which has Japan's finest castle.
Do your research on Japan before you arrive - you will have a much better experience. The JNTO website is a good place to start.
