Hi there,

It would be advisable to use a 7 day JR Pass for this trip. The cost of a 7 day JR Pass is about the same as a normal return ticket Tokyo - Kyoto using the Shinkansen. Now you get 7 days of unlimited travel for the same price, that can also come in useful for local trains in Tokyo and Osaka, as well as for travel to the Airport.

In general the trip looks quite relaxed and should be well doable with kids.
