Hi,

puh, its so confusing and hard to believe that using public transport in Japan will be convenient. :-)

First time in Japan. We arrive in Tokyo, stay there 4 nights and move on to Kyoto for another 4 nights. Back to Tokyo and one night at an airport hotel in Haneda.

From Kyoto we plan day trips to Nara, Osaka (and maybe Hiroshima). Tokyo we explore the inner city and if water is good maybe Mt. Fuji.

  1. Do we need JR pass?
  2. which one to take as we travel for 9 days? 7-day pass or 14-day pass?
  3. we travel with 3 kids (9, 5, 1). Do they need JR passes too?

Thank you for help and recommendations.

Katja

Hello Katja,

1 and 2.) Yes, I would recommend using a JR Pass for your itinerary. The cost of a 7 day JR Pass is about the same as a normal return ticket Tokyo - Kyoto. From there any additional travel you do is what you save. For instance, the trip to Hiroshima would be free. Local travel just in Tokyo does not cost a lot and I would recommend using normal tickets for the remaining 2 days.

3.) Children between the age of 6-11 can use a child pass, which is half price. Children below the age of 6 can travel for free but limitations apply. Such as one per adult, details are here:

Hope this helps,
Daniel
