8 days travel (Osaka - Kyoto - Osaka - Fuji (Hakone or Kawaguchiko) - Osaka)

Hi, I will be travelling to Osaka (arriving on 14 June, departing on 21 June) and will be there for 8 days and I have a few questions to ask.

1) Should I buy the 7D unlimited JR pass? If so, should I start using it on the 14 June, and hence buy a separate ticket for 21st June (as my flight back is at Osaka International Airport at 10am)? Do I then buy the separate tickets when I am in Japan itself or do I have to pre buy it online prior to my trip?

2) May I know how do I maximise my JR pass to get to Hakone or Kawaguchiko? Which area will you suggest going (I will be staying there for 2 days and 1 night) in terms of feasibility and scenary?

3) May I know if the JR pass covers all the metro train stations in Osaka and Kyoto itself? If not, do I buy those metro train tickets online or when I am over in Japan?

Thank you very much and I am looking forward to your reply :)

Hi there,

1.) Although the difference is small, I would suggest purchasing normal ticket for this itinerary. As ticket prices are just below the price of the 7 day JR Pass. However the difference is small and visiting Tokyo alone would make the JR Pass a good consideration.

2.) In terms of accessibility, Hakone is much easier to access from Osaka than Kawaguchiko (the difference being almost nearly 3 hours of travel). So my suggestion would be to visit Hakone. To get there, take the Shinkansen (bullet train) from Shin-Osaka to Odawara station. From there local transport runs throughout the area. A Hakone Free Pass could be very useful here too! You could even make a day trip to Kawaguchiko from Hakone.

3.) The JR Pass does not cover the metro/subway. Instead you may use the local JR network in Tokyo, Osaka and Kyoto. The JR is very extensive in Osaka and Tokyo and will get you to most places within most cities. In Kyoto the JR can be used only to a limited extend, mostly to southern and western Kyoto.

Hope this helps,
Daniel

Hi Daniel,

Thank you so much for your reply! :)

With reference to your first point, I actually have a few questions:
-How do I check the price for each individual ticket to the destinations? - Do i buy these individual tickets prior to my visit? Or in Japan train station itself?

For the second point, yes now I totally agree that Hakone is so much more accessible.. will definitely want to drop by Kawaguchiko if I have the chance, but I think it might be a little too rushed as I will only be spending 2D1N over at Hakone region. The free pass sounds like a real deal! Thank you for the recommendation!

As for the last point, I think I will then use the JR pass for the local JR networks in Osaka, and perhaps take the metro while in Kyoto.

Thank you so much once again for your valuable inputs!

Hi again!

It is easy to find ticket prices using www.hyperdia.com, tickets can be purchased once you are in Japan and can be bought at any JR station. Have a look at our Hyperdia Guide to understand all the details.

Travel in Kyoto is generally done by bus. You may want to consider buying a 500yen bus ticket in Kyoto as it covers the entire city and it's easy to make savings with. A normal bus tickets costs 230yen per ride!

Hope this helps,
Daniel
