I know this sounds terribly obvious that I should go for the 14 day pass, but I was wondering how much of the JR pass I'm actually using in-city and whether I should change up my itinerary to better reflect the stays in major cities so that I can minimize transportation cost.

Day 1 - 4 : Tokyo (will be making day trips to china, disneyland)
Day 5 : Ito City, Fujiyoshi
Day 6 - 9 : Kyoto (will be making day trips to lake biwa, kobe, himeji, nara, osaka)
Day 10-11: Kinosaki Onsen
Day 12 : Osaka
Day 13-14: Iwade, Wakayama
Day 15-16: Back to tokyo (Maybe I can bus back to tokyo or something)

Hi there,

The JR Pass covers local JR lines in Tokyo, Kyoto and Osaka. Especially Tokyo and Osaka have a great JR Network, that covers most of both cities. In Kyoto most places are reached using the bus or metro. Though you can use the JR Pass to explore the south and west, such as Arashiyama, Fushimi Inari, Tofuku-ji and Uji.

That said, the JR Pass really shines when used for longer travel and making day trips like you do in Kyoto is how you absolutely get the best value possible.

Hope this helps,
Daniel

PS: With all this travel, I do recommend a 14 day JR Pass.

Hi there,

If you do want to use other kind of local transport, then buying day tickets can be a good deal.

For instance, in Kyoto there is a 500yen all day bus ticket.
