Hi,

We will be be in Japan for 13 days and 14 nights and were wondering whether to get the 7 or 14 day JR pass- or 7 day pass and then individual train tickets? Our itinerary appears below:

Arrive at Kansai airport, train to Osaka city centre. Spend 3 nights and 2 days in Osaka includes a day trip to Kyosan and back to Osaka.

Train from Osaka to Kyoto. Spend 6 nights and 6 days in Kyoto with day trips to Nikko (maybe), Hakone, Mt Fuji and Kakamura.
Train from Kyoto to Kawachinagano (Osaka Perfecture)- spend a day at Ryokan.

Next day, take train from Kawachinagano to Kyoto. Spend 3 nights and 4 days in Kyoto with day trip to Nara and back.
Last day, travel from Kyoto to Kansai Airport.

Please advise whether it would be feasible to get the 14 day pass.

Also, would you recommend as many day trips from Tokyo or should we limit these?
Are there other day trips that we should consider from Kyoto?

Look forward to hearing from you.

Bilkis

Hello there,

I guess you mean Tokyo instead of Kyoto for 6 nights and 6 days?
Even if you don't, a 7 day JR Pass would be helpful for making the return Osaka - Tokyo/Nikko and other day trips.

I think that you've covered the best day trips from Osaka/Tokyo/Kyoto.

If you wish to add some more from Kyoto, consider a visit to Hikone or Lake Biwa, just north of Kyoto. They are very pleasant area's but not as busy with tourist.

Hope this helps,
Daniel

Dear Daniel San

Thank you for your reply and yes, I did mean 6 days in Tokyo (not Kyoto) :-)

Please, however, advise whether it is better (more cost effective) to get a 14 days pass or would a 7 day pass and buying individual train tickets for the day trips be cheaper?

Thank you
Bilkis

Hi Bilkis,

A 7 day JR Pass would by far be the best option if you can at least cover the return Tokyo - Kyoto/Osaka with it. I would then buy normal tickets for what you can't cover with the JR Pass.

Hope this helps,
Daniel
