Hi there,

I have 12 days in Japan. I'm arriving in Tokyo this August. Besides Tokyo, I'm planning to visit Osaka and Kyoto. Lately found Takayama is well worth a visit. So my itinerary is :

Tokyo - 4 days
Takayama - 2 days
Osaka - 2 days
Kyoto - 3 days
back to Tokyo - 1 day (last day)

Is it worthwhile to purchase 14 days JR pass?
This is my first time to Japan. I would be greateful if you could kindly give some recommendations on the JR pass (and if possible suggestions for my itinerary)

Many thanks

Hi there,

Takayama makes for a great visit indeed and is not to be missed!

I made a little list of ticket prices to see what would make the most sense for you.

Tokyo - Takayama ¥ 14,000
Takayama - Osaka ¥ 13,550
Osaka - Kyoto ¥ 540
Kyoto - Tokyo ¥ 13,020

The adds up to ¥ 41,110, a 7 day JR Pass is ¥ 28,300. So you could make some very nice savings with it :)
You would make the best savings if you could plan all the long distance travel in 7 days.

You could also go for the 14-day JR Pass if the above does not work out. This way you could still make some nice savings. This because you can use it to travel to and from the airport on the Narita express which is about 3000yen/one way and you would also have your local travel in Tokyo covered.

I think you already have a very nice itinerary for the available time, I would recommend a visit to Kanazawa if you find some extra time.

I hope this helps,
Daniel
