Hi,

We will be arriving in Narita airport on 3-Oct and will be leaving on 10-Oct, so in total it's an 8-day stay in Japan.

My problem now is whether to activate the JR Pass on 3-Oct or 4-Oct, below is our planned itinerary:

3-Oct - Narita Airport to Togoshi station (where we are staying), then go to Ginza or Shibuya or Shinjuku for the day
4-Oct - Disneyland in Tokyo then probably Roponggi at night
5-Oct - Go to Mt.Fuji, is it ok to go there on a Sunday?
6-Oct - Travel from Tokyo to Kyoto in the morning, what places can you recommend to visit on our 1st day at Kyoto?
7-Oct - Explore Kyoto and go to Nara and Osaka, what places can you recommend?
8-Oct - Travel back from Kyoto to Tokyo, then explore Tokyo, places you can recommend?
9-Oct - Tsukiji fish market in the morning, go to Akihabara, Ueno and Asakusa if still got time
10-Oct - Travel to Narita airport for departure

We saw in the JR Pass website that there's a discounted price for Narita express from NRT airport to Shinagawa (around 1500JPY), and we're thinking we can save more if we buy that then activate the JR Pass on 4-Oct which we can use for use for our travel going to Narita airport on the last day. But would like to know your professional view on this since we will be going around Tokyo on our 1st day as well =)

Also, is it avaisable to buy a PASMO card when in Tokyo? And what is the difference between a Blank Pasmo and a Pasmo commuter ticket?

Lastly for the Mt.Fuji, since we are 1st time travelers in Japan is it easy to find our way to go there? Or would you advise us to take on the 1-Day tour of Mt.Fuji, Hakone, Gotamba that the travel agencies are offering?

So sorry for the long questions =) Would greatly appreciate your help on this.

Thanks for your time and hoping to hear from you soon.

Regards,

Hi there,

I would recommend activating the JR Pass on day 4 and then buy the 1,500yen ticket. Traveling back to Narita Airport will cost a little over 3,000yen without the JR Pass and I don't think that you would do this amount of travel on the 1st day.

You could also buy an IC card such as Pasmo or Suica. These are all interchangeable and easy to use when you travel around Tokyo and other parts of Japan. A commuter ticket is a ticket which is valid on a a certain route for a fixed period of time and is only interesting if you travel the same route every day (from work to home).

A tour package to Fuji is not a bad idea, travel to Fuji can be hard to figure out and it is nice to get this done for you.

Hope this helps!

Hi Daniel,

Thank you so much for your reply!

We will then take your advice to buy the discounted Narita express to city on our first day and activate our JR pass on 4-Oct which is our 2nd day and to be used all through our stay.

Will Mt. Fuji be too crowded on a Sunday?

Any place you can recommend to visit in Kyoto or Osaka?

Appreciate your help!

Thanks and Regards,

Hi there,

Fuji is HUGE! Don't worry it does not get crowded quickly!

I can give you a many recommendations but could you tell me what you are interested in? This way I can match something nice to your interests.

Hope to hear from you!

Hi Daniel,

Thanks for your reply.

We want to explore the cultural and nice sceneries in Kyoto like temples etc.. We will only be staying for 2 days in kyoto and we are planning to go to Nara and Osaka as well.. So we want to make the most of our limited stay there..😊

Good day!

In Kyoto I would recommend a visit to Kyomizudera, Goin, Arashiyama and of course Fushimi Inari. You could also visit the Golden Pavillion as it is so iconic, the garden around the silver pavilion is also very beautiful.

Nara is not so big and you'll see everything there for sure in a single day.

Osaka is a great metropolis and should be enjoyed as such. I'd recommend visiting Namba, Shinsaibashi and Dotonbori, these are all linked and convey the real Osaka atmosphere. It's also great for shopping and trying out small Japanese snacks and restaurants.

Enjoy!
Daniel
