Hello,
We are 3 adults and a child (eleven and a half years old). We want to buy JR PASS - 7 days travel cards and use them on the 2nd of August to travel from Tokyo to Kyoto with the Tōkaidō Shinkansen, Hikari train. We want to visit Osaka on the 3rd of August and return to Kyoto on the same day, and on the 5th to travel back from Kyoto to Tokyo. This will be our first visit to Japan and I would like to ask.
1. How much will the total price be in Euro for the 4 of us (3 Adults, 1 child (11.5)) to buy JR Pass- 7 days?
2. Do we have to reserve seats in the train we are planning to use before the trip and how much would that cost ?
3. Can our travel with Tōkaidō Shinkansen, Hikari train start from Shinjuku Station and end there as well ?
4. Do we have to buy tickets from Shinjuku Station to Narita Airport or the JR PASS covers this trip? Also is there a shorter route from Kyoto to Narita Airoprt, except the one Kyoto-Shinjuku-Narita?
5. What time does the earliest Hikari train departs from Kyoto to Tokyo. We have a flight at 12:30.
6. Can we use the JR PASS - 7 days to travel in Tokyo on the 30/31 July and 01 August, or we need Suika ?
7. Is the a difference in the train schedule for weekdays and holidays?
8. Do you know if we can store some luggage we won't need in Kyoto in the Shinjuku Station (3-4 cases for 3-4 days) and ~how much would that cost?
9. How much will be the delivery to our address for 4 JR PASS - 7 days (13 or 52 Euro) ?

Thank you very much, we are looking forward your answer and to visiting your country.

Hi there!

Here are some answers for you:

  1. While the exact price changes regularly with the exchange rate, the current price for 3 adults and 1 child 7 day JR Pass is: €987. You can check out current prices online here.
  2. Japan Rail Pass holders can use both reserved and non-reserved seating totally free of charge. To make a free seat reservation all you need to do is show your JR Pass at the JR ticket counter and specify the train that you'd like to reserve seats on. Most JR trains have both non-reserved and reserved seating (including the shinkansens), the main exceptions you may encounter are the Narita Express, and the Hayabusa Tohoku shinkansen, both of which require (free) reservations.
  3. The Tokaido shinkansen bullet train terminals in Tokyo are at Shinagawa and Tokyo. The closest of these to Shinjuku is Shinagawa which you can access on the JR Yamanote line (itinerary).
  4. The JR Pass covers the Narita Express so you will not have to purchase tickets for this (but be sure to reserve your seat before you board as above). From Kyoto, the simplest way to Narita is Kyoto-Tokyo-Narita as you will not have to transfer from Shinagawa to Shinjuku.
  5. To catch a flight at 12:30, you'll need to be at Narita by 10:30. The earliest Hikari leaves Kyoto at 06:23, getting you into Tokyo at 9:10 however the next Narita Express doesn't leave until 10:03, getting you into Narita at 10:58. I don't think this will be a problem for you and you should be able to make your flight. Here's a sample itinerary.
  6. You can use the JR Pass on all JR lines inside Tokyo (Here's map of JR lines in Tokyo for reference).
  7. Normally there is not much difference between weekend and weekday services. You can look up train timetables and costs for all of your legs at the Hyperdia travel planning website and learn how to use Hyperdia for Japan Rail Pass holders through our video blog.
  8. I'm not sure about long term storage at Shinjuku, but you will be able to use coin lockers for up to 3 calendar days. We have a good blog post about the sizes and costs of these coin lockers online.
  9. You can find all our delivery costs online here.

Hope all this helps!
