I will be traveling Japan with my family in October. My oldest turns 6 in August. How strict are the rules? I'm trying to save as much as I possibly can. She is small enough that she will be fine sitting on my lap. Will they check her passport and make me purchase a ticket/seat for her? Will I be ok just purchasing the 2 adult tickets and have our 2 children sit on our laps?

Thank you!

Hi there,

The JR Pass is checked with your passport and tickets are checked on every express train.

Penalty fares are 3 times the normal fare, which can easily add up to 300usd, I would not change this also a child pass is only 50% of the price but does entitle your child to a seat at all times.

Hope this helps,
