Hi.
I will be travelling to Japan. Most of my trip I will be staying at Osaka and Kyoto and join the local tour. During the journey, I will travelling to tokyo for 5 days. Is it advisable to buy a 7 days jr pass or just normal pass during my stay at Tokyo?
Thanks.

Hi Simon,

That would depend on whether you make a return trip Kyoto - Tokyo or fly out of Tokyo. A 7 day JR Pass is roughly the same price as a normal return ticket on the Shinkansen between Tokyo - Kyoto and you can use it for local travel on the JR network in Tokyo as well. However if you just go one way, then it would be better to just buy normal tickets.

Hope this helps!

Hi daniel.
I am not doing return trip back to osaka.. where can I check the normal train ticket's price and their schedule? I will be hopping around Osaka, Kyoto, kobe and Nara. And end my trip at Tokyo. Each city I will buy the 1 day or 2 day pass. I need to check the normal train ticket's price between the cities and compare to jr pass. By the way, Tokunai pass in Tokyo is it cover all the metro station?

Really appreciate all your helps. Thanks again

Hi Simon,

You can use Hyperdia.com to look up time tables, ticket fares and much more. We also got a Blogpost that explains all the details.

The Tokunai ticket is for JR lines only, however there's a similar all day metro pass available as well.

Take care!

Hi Daniel.
My plan has changed.. I am doing return trip from Osaka-Tokyo. And I planning to buy the 7 days JR pass. however I notice that if I bought the Icoca & Haruka pass, it won't cover my return trip to Kansai Airport. Can I use the 7 days JR pass to airport? If not how much is a normal ticket cost? Is Haruka the only train going to airport?

Hope to hear from you soon. Thank you very much.

Regards.

Hi Simon,

Yes the JR Pass covers travel to Kansai Airport, both on local services and the Haruka Express.

Without the JR Pass a one way ticket on the Haruka is around 3,000yen and about 1,200yen using a local service (ticket prices can change a little depending on the season).

Does that help?

Hi, Daniel
Tokyo has many rail/subway lines. How to know which line is belong to JR? Which i can use my JR Pass. Is JR East Pass the most economical pass to travel tokyo? Does it cover all the lines?

 Thanks for all your help.

Hi Simon!

All JR lines/stations are marked by the sign with JR. It's not hard to miss once you are there. It is generally best to buy normal tickets if you stay locally in Tokyo as travel around the capital is not expensive.

Hope this help as well :)
Daniel
