Hi all,

Need some advise, first time travelers to Japan and a little confused whether the JR Pass is convenient + value for money.

Our itinerary is as follows -

  • Fly into Tokyo 2030pm (NRT airport) 5/9/16, spend 5 days exploring the city. Intending on staying in a hotel/or serviced apartment in Shinjuku. Day trip to Hakone/Mt Fuji during our stay in Tokyo. Day trip or stay in a onsen.

  • Bullet train to Kyoto 11/9/16, spend 5 days, base ourselves in Kyoto, intending on staying 3 nights in hotel/or serviced apartment, 2 nights in traditional ryokan, with day trip to Kobe/Nara during our stay in Kyoto.

  • Bullet train to Osaka 17/9/16, (we depart Osaka 22/9/16 0930am KIX airport), will stay in Osaka for the remainder of our stay in Japan. Day trip to Hiroshima/Miyajima. I would love to fit Nagasaki although not sure if we will be able to.

Would love day trip suggestions/or feasible changes to the itinerary to get the best experience during our stay in Japan. Have not booked any accommodation yet or purchased the JR Pass but will be looking to do so soon.

Thank you all!

Hello Julz,

A 7 day JR Pass would be a good deal if you can include travel from Tokyo - Kyoto - Osaka and the day trip to Hiroshima with it. Though this would meaning making the day trip to Hiroshima on the day when you travel to Hiroshima.

There's a transfer at Shin-Osaka if you travel from Kyoto to Hiroshima. You could store your luggage there, make a trip to Hiroshima and then pick-up your luggage again before traveling on to your accommodation in Osaka.

Nagasaki is quite far away and a 14 day JR Pass would be a great option if you visit it but I would recommend staying there at least 1 night.

Hope this helps,
Daniel
