questions & answers: using the japan rail pass

14-day pass worth it?

3 of us are planning to travel in June/July.

We are unsure whether or not to get the 7-day pass or the 14-day pass.

We are spending 3 nights in TOKYO.
Then travelling to KYOTO and spending 8 nights. From Kyoto we have day trips to Osaka, Nara and Hiroshima.
Then travelling from Hiroshima back to TOKYO and staying for another 4 nights.
We plan to go visit Fuji from Tokyo too.

Since we are staying in Kyoto for 8 nights, the 7 day pass would not cover us, so is it worth getting the 14 day pass?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Hello there,

Let's have a look at ticket prices and see if a JR Pass would be useful.

Tokyo - Kyoto ¥ 13,600
Kyoto - Hiroshima ¥ 11,090
Hiroshima - Tokyo ¥ 18,560

For a total of ¥ 43,250 the 14 day JR Pass is ¥ 46,390. So you are very close but right now you would not yet cover the price of the JR Pass. However I do think that a JR Pass is worth considering, you can for instance also use it for travel locally in Tokyo, travel to Osaka, part of the way to Fuji and also to the Airport. Also you would just need one ticket for all your travel, making it very convenient to get around.

Hope this helps!
