questions & answers: using the japan rail pass

14 day pass

14 day pass

We will be arriving in Tokyo Haneda airport 5.05 am on 24 December and departing Tokyo Haneda airport on 10 January at 10.20 pm. This is our first time and we are thinking of purchasing a 14-day Green pass. We want to visit the following places:

  1. Tokyo
  2. Osaka
  3. Kyoto
  4. Hiroshima
  5. Mt Fuji
  6. Nagano ski area

Could you please advise on the best route to take using the JR pass. Please note that we are also looking at flying out of Tokyo to Seoul for 3 days within this time so would appreciate if you can provide some suggestions.

many thanks

Hello there,

That's quite a trip to plan but a very nice one. I think I would use the JR Pass for the first 14 days to travel to the above places and then make the trip to Seoul from Tokyo. This way you get the best use out of the JR Pass.

A possible itinerary could be:
Tokyo - Kyoto - Hiroshima - Osaka - Hakone (for Fuji) - Nagano and return to Tokyo in 14 days. All these places out of Nagano are on the Tokaido/Sanyo Shinkansen line. Which is the main high speed line between Tokyo and Hiroshima, making for easy access. Nagano is also easy to access from Hakone using the Hokuriku Shinkansen via Tokyo.

Hope this helps,
